It's the middle of the night and you've already spent $50 in drinks, your wallet is empty and the nearest ATM is 10 blocks away. It's definitively time for you to start looking for free drinks.
You, idiot, took my margarita!
I discover this technique when I went to the bathroom. I dropped my half-full glass of margarita on the table (around $10) and when I went back: it was gone. I asked nicely the bartender what's going on and without asking anything in particular, he made me a new one. I tipped.
One free drink.
Drink by yourself
When you're new in a town, you often end up drinking by yourself. You go to a bar, you order your frist drink, then the second one. You socialize with the bartender and you're talking about life. If you're a nice person (understand: already spent a lot of money), you'll eventually get one for free (I got 2, one from each bartender!).
When it's not from the bartender, you can have free drinks by looking randomly at people around: take a sad look (like something serious happened in your life) and look around with a glass half-full. I always got someone stopping by, saying hi, introducing her/himself and then ordering me a drink. I guess the trick is to be by yourself.
One more free drink.
Attract the weirdos
This is probably the most strange advice. Everywhere you can got, there is weird people. When I say weird, it's the kind of people who are randomly talking to everyone, who are not necessary interesting (don't get me wrong, they will talk about stuff you don't want to hear at this point of the night).
The cool thing is while people around will see you in an uncomfortable situation, one will stop by and pretend "we're friends". Then you have to play the game: start talking about your life to make the weirdo run away. Once the mission is accomplished, you'll socialize, thank them for helping you and at some point, you'll cheer!
For your information: weirdos tend to easily offer you a drink. You have two options: accept the red pill (no) or the blue pill (yes). I always take the red pill: it isn't very nice to ask someone you don't want to talk to pay for your drink. If they insist, find an excuse to leave nicely the conversation.

This advice works in all situations: someone starts talking to you and your glass is empty. You're talking, talking. It's time to cheer for something. Once have cheered, the person you are talking with will see your empty glass and will immediately offer you a drink.

I almost forgot, but remember: you have events when you pay one price to have unlimited something (wine, beer etc.), you have on-site events (like during the design week @ sf, we went to Astro Studio, they had an open bar and free entrance) and of course the Happy Hours!
